Our friends at Amigo & Amigo aim to create works that transcend culture and language and allow people to connect with art regardless of different backgrounds. The chessboard is a universal symbol of play and is one of the few games that can be picked up any time and played anywhere in the world. It is a poetic game which uses beautifully crafted mini sculptures, each with its own set of rules and movements. Chess requires focus and intellect and can be played by two people of any age with no common language. To take this iconic symbol and supersize it, we hope to bring an element of wonder and joy to the public as they explore our gigantic chess set.

The forms of the chess pieces themselves are inspired by the 20th Century Bauhaus Movement. This is a significant movement as it is considered the shift in history where art and design came together. As Amigo & Amigo is a group of artists and designers who are passionate about modern art, they were inspired by and aimed to pay homage to this moment in design history.
